Portalea
Video of the late great Gerardo Portalea excerpted from Tango Bayle nuestro (1988)
In this film Portalea is shown in his kitchen demonstrating the cadencia of the old days and the cadencia as they do it now.
Another clip: YouTube - Entrevista a Gerardo Portalea Interview conducted at Sin Rumbo.
In an interview in La Nacion, Pupy Castello was asked where does his style come from. He answered,
In the first place from people like Gerardo Portalea, who does not have a great variation of steps, but he has an impressive cadencia. For better or worse, my style comes from these old men of Urquiza. Standing well, well armed, carrying the beat. Not running, because now they dance a Pugliese and it seem that they dance a D'Arienzo. Earlier, in the contests, what they were looking for was the beat and the elegance, more than the steps. To walk is everything.*From Los milongueros enseñan sus secretos | LANACION.com (Martes 27 de julio de 2004)
In one of Mingo and Esther Pugliese's instructional videos (Bridge to the Tango), Mingo makes an unusual digression. They have just explained the way to use the movement called vaiven, then Mingo remarks that this movement, it is not very common, but there is one dancer from the older generation who used it a lot, and still does. He is Gerardo Portalea. Esther adds that he uses the vaiven because he dances to the music of Di Sarli.
