A ball at the Anjo House

YouTube - A Ball at the Anjo House Setsuko Hara Kozaburo Yoshimua

The ending of a classic Japanese feature film, including a tango between father and daughter. Beautiful dancing, "ballroom" style.

A ball at the Anjo House (1947/b&W/88mn./16mm)
Dir. Kozaburo Yoshimura ; scr. Kaneto Shindo ; W/ Osamu Tazikawa, Setsuko Hara

A family of noble lineage is stripped of its fortune and titles during the Allied occupation's drive to democratize Japan in the aftermath of its dfeat in WWII. The Anjo family throws one last party the night before vacating their mansion, and family members, guests, and servants all reflect on the changes they see pervading their homeland

Tango Television episode 6/8

This is my favorite episode of Ney Melo's "Tango Television", a series of short video episodes about Tango in Buenos Aires.

YouTube - Episode 6 of 8 - Tango Television includes the dancing of (1) Ney Melo y Jennifer Bratt, (2) Federico y Ariadna Naveira, and (3) Gustavo Naveira y Giselle Anne, and the "Love on a Razor's Edge" Music Video, plus scenes from Buenos Aires.

See all of Ney's videos here: Ney Melo Videos.

Reorg

I'm going to have to reorganize the videos site. Having all the player images on this page is too high of a load. So I will move the images/player into separate pages.

I think I will probably re-index the YouTube and Google Videos so that they are more by topic rather than by date. Chronologicaly sequence lets readers see what's new (to me), but the number of files is starting to be hard to browse through without some tagging and sorting.

Also, people often leave comments asking what song is being played. I will try to give song information if I know it.

These changes will take some time. I'll start the new way of posting videos now, though.

Tango Explained Part 2

Q: "Is it as tricky as it looks?"
A: "Yes ... sometimes you end up with bruising"

Q: "How many ganchos is good and how many is bad? Like what if he did 450?"
A: "Yes, that would be too much."

A: "Is it real, or is it just choreography... that's the main part."

I'm just disappointed that they didn't explain about those two guys who were dancing with chairs.

Off Topic Dancing

I can't resist posting a few videos that are totally what dancing is all about for me. But they aren't tango, so I'll just put the links and if people are interested they can go to youtube or google and watch them there.

(1) YouTube - Big Dancing, Small Town Two youths get arrested for dancing in public places. I got thrown out of places or told to stop dancing when I was a kid.

(2) James Brown I Feel Good - Google Video
When Terry Gross interviewed James Brown on her NPR radio program "Fresh Air," she asked him where he picked up his dance moves. He gave the astonishing answer "from baseball." "From baseball?" she replied. James Brown (who had played semi-pro baseball) said, yes, Jackie Robinson would do the splits sliding into base. If a runner scored he did some dancing. He said that baseball's "negro leagues" had a lot of style, and that our culture missed a lot by not giving them wider exposure.

Google Video currently has an amazing number of James Brown videos. You'll see them when you go to this one I have linked.

But check out these:

  • James Brown The Legend James Brown Papas Got A Brand New Bag - Google Video Marvelous montage of the man gettin' up, gettin' down, doin' his thing, gettin' into it, you know, like a ... what? ... like a ... what? ...

  • James Brown Sex Machine - Google Video

  • James Brown - "Please Please Please" - Google Video This is a good one of the cape.

  • James Brown Olympia 1966 - Google Video Nine minutes of concert footage. Note also the backup singers' choreography.

  • James Brown DANCE FUNK LATE SEVENTIES - Google Video Documentary shows demonstrations of popular 60s and 70s dances created or influenced by James Brown. I was surprised to see him doing the "robot."

  • James Brown Out Of Sight 1964 - Google Video It's hard to stop; they're all so good.

    Murga Montevideo

Murga is a set of traditional theater arts from Uruquayan carnival. (See Murga entry in Wikipedia. These videos show murga performances from the New Year's celebration of 2006. Carnival takes place during Feb/Mar.

Murga is also associated with candombe. Some tango dancers and musicians have explored the incorporation of murga and candombe into tango dance performance. Examples are Luis Bruni, Pascale Coquigny and Juan Carlos Caceres (see Tango Noticias (USA) [Luis Bruni y Pascale Coquigny]) and Eduardo Cappussi and Mariana Flores (see Cappussi Flores ::Tango ::).

    Candombe Parade - Montevideo

In this one you hear people clapping a 3-2 mambo clave pattern against the drumming. I don't know if that's part of candombe drumming, or if participants just imposed it. Helped me hear the drum parts in a different way, though.
